Consul General Liao's Remark on the "Chinese Higher Education Day" in Politecnico di Milano

Respected Vice Minister Du Yubo, 

Respected Rector of Politecnico di Milano, Mr. Azzone, Respected Ms. Valentina Aprea, Councillor for Education, Training and Job of Regione Lombardia,

Distinguished Guests,Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good morning to you all.

    

     It's my great honor to be invited by Politecnico di Milano to participate in the opening ceremony for the "Chinese Higher Education Day". Please allow me, on behalf of the Chinese 

Ambassador Ding Wei and also Consulate General in Milan, to extend our warm welcome to the Chinese Delegation headed by Vice Minister Du. Hope your work and stay in Milano be

 filled with success and joy. I have noticed that, this year marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of Politecnico di Milano. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes and sincere congratulations to Rector Azzone and all the faculty members and students of this great University. 

    Since China and Italy established the diplomatic relationship in 1970, the two sides have seen frequent high-level exchange of visits. Chinese president Hu Jintao, premier Wen Jiabao, new president Xi Jinping and CPPCC chairman Jia Qinglin successively visited Italy in the last four years. These high-level visits deepened the mutual understanding and pushed forward the Sino-Italy bilateral ties to a new height. The bilateral trade has been growing rapidly and reached a record high of more than 55 billion US dollars in 2011. Meanwhile, cooperation and collaboration in other fields such as education, science and technology, environment protection and tourism, are also blooming with fruitful results. For example, in 2009, the number of Chinese students enrolled in Italian universities was under 5,000. Now, it has reached more than 10,000. Thanks for the endorsement and support from the two governments and thanks should also be extended to universities such as Politecnico di Milano for their commitment in promoting international communication. 

    In the recent session of CPPCC and National Peoples Congress, our new president Xi Jinping proposed a new concept of "Chinese Dream" which means a wealthy and prosperous 

society, happy life for Chinese people and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. It's not only the dream of Chinese people but also the dream of the people of the whole world. The realization of this Chinese Dream will bring tremendous development opportunities globally.

Politecnico di Milano has set up a good model in the area of education and science exchange and communication with Chinese Universities. It has signed numerous cooperative agreements with Chinese key universities such as Qinghua, Beihang, Xi'an Jiaotong, Shanghai Jiaotong, just to name a few. The Sino-Italy Campus with Tongji is an excellent platform. In July 2012, the two universities jointly participated in the first China New Design Exhibition in the renowned Tirennale di Milano. As far as I know, Politecnico di Milano is the only university to have a vice rector dedicated to Chinese affairs. In the past two years, professor Noci, vice rector for China and his team have visited China frequently to deepen the mutual understanding with the Chinese partners and increase the presence and influence of Politecnico di Milano in China. Thank you vice rector Noci, and your effort is much appreciated.  

    Today we are here to attend the Chinese Higher- Education Day which is co-organized by China Scholarship Council (CSC) and Politecnico di Milano. Both sides have done a lot in preparing for this great event. I'm sure that this exhibition will provide comprehensive information for Italian students who are interested in going to and learning in China and will eventually consolidate the talent exchange cooperation. And I believe this event will add another splendid color to the 150th anniversary of Politecnico di Milano.
